Operators who find a Viavi RF Vision tester that will not power on, or that shows an abnormal charging indication, need not conclude immediately that the instrument has failed. In many cases the battery has entered a deep-discharge protection mode, a state that can be reversed with the correct charging procedure and without returning the unit to the factory.
The LED built into the power button is the primary means of assessing battery condition on the RF Vision. Once the charger is connected, the indicator's behavior should be observed before any further action is taken.
| Indicator state | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Steady green, flashing rapidly when the button is pressed | Deep discharge; trickle charging in progress |
| Flashing on its own | Normal charging |
| Steady green, no flash when the button is pressed | Fully charged |
A steady green light accompanied by a rapid flash on pressing the power button confirms that the battery has fallen below its normal operating threshold and is being brought back slowly. A light that pulses without input indicates a routine charge cycle, while an unvarying green light indicates that the battery is at capacity.
When an instrument has gone unused long enough for the battery to over-discharge, the RFV-2000 may not register a charging state at once. In that situation the unit should be left connected to power continuously rather than repeatedly disconnected and reconnected.
Depending on the extent of depletion, returning the battery to a normal cycle can take two to three days of uninterrupted charging. The process should be allowed to run until the indicator holds a steady green without flashing, which signals that the battery has been fully activated and charged.
If the LED remains entirely dark, or behaves erratically, after an extended charging period, the instrument's condition should be documented and a professional inspection requested through the return authorization (RGA) process.
Deep discharge is largely avoidable with routine charge management. The battery should be kept at or above 50 percent of capacity before the instrument is placed in long-term storage, and the charge level should be verified every two to three months.
Storing the unit in a fully depleted state accelerates wear on the battery and increases the likelihood that the protection mode will engage the next time the device is switched on. Regular checks also ensure that the instrument is ready for use when it is needed.
